STL to PLY Converter
Convert embedded triangle geometry from STL to PLY.
What changes when exporting STL as PLY?
An STL source is useful for 3D printing and simple mesh export. STL stores a triangle surface without UV textures or scene hierarchy; it is widely used for 3D printing.
The PLY result is intended for geometry exchange and some 3D-scanning workflows. PLY can store point or mesh geometry, but this export focuses on the geometry supported by the converter.
Before you download
- The converter operates on supported mesh geometry. Do not assume it preserves original materials, UV textures, skeletal animation or full scene hierarchy.
- Check mesh units, face orientation and scale in your target application, especially before printing or importing into a game engine.
Instructions
- 1
Select the STL model file from your device.
- 2
Run the geometry conversion to PLY.
- 3
Download the PLY mesh and check its geometry and scale in a compatible viewer.
About this tool
Convert embedded triangle geometry from STL to PLY.
Geometry only. Textures, materials, rigging and animation are not preserved; complex polygons are triangulated. glTF imports require embedded (not external) buffers and non-interleaved triangle accessors.
Practical questions
What does this tool produce?
The exporter converts supported mesh geometry and triangle faces to the target format. It is intended for geometric exchange, not complete scene recreation. PLY represents vertices and faces in a polygon mesh; this exporter focuses on geometry rather than custom properties. Input is read from the STL mesh and exported in PLY geometry syntax.
What should I check before using the result?
Materials, textures, skinning, animation, lights and other scene properties are not retained by this geometry-only conversion. Non-triangular faces may be triangulated. Check units, coordinate orientation, face normals and geometric scale in the destination application. Embedded resources and advanced scene features may not import.
