What changes when exporting STL as PLY?
An STL source is useful for 3D printing and simple mesh export. STL stores a triangle surface without UV textures or scene hierarchy; it is widely used for 3D printing.
The PLY result is intended for geometry exchange and some 3D-scanning workflows. PLY can store point or mesh geometry, but this export focuses on the geometry supported by the converter.
